in the cnn newsroom. >>> we begin with a heartbreaking tragedy in braz really. 330 people died in an early morning fire in a crowded nightclub in santa maria. college students were celebrating the end of their college break before heading back to classes on monday. fire officials say the blaze was over cap pays the when the blaze broke out at 2:00 in the morning go to cnn's rafael romo who has the latest. how did this fire start? >> reporter: there was a concert about 2:00 this morning and part of the concert involved pyrotechnics. and what firefighters are saying is part of the flames reached the foam insulation on the ceiling and that's how the fire might have started. not being conclusive about this at this point. the problem was that the foam created a lot of smoke. it was very dense. it was very thick. as you can see into these images, off lot of people frantically trying to escape an emergency situation. what happened firefighters are also saying, miguel is that the place did not have enough emergency exits. >> oy. those firefighters going through there the rescuers looking for the d

. these are the top stories we're following right now in the "cnn newsroom." >>> tragic news out of brazil. at least 233 people have died in an early morning fire in a crowded nightclub in the city of santa maria. college students were jammed inside celebrating the end of their summer vacation when the blaze broke out about 2:00 in the morning. let's go to rafael romo with the latest. rafael, how did this fire start? >> there was a concert and part of the concert included using pyrotechnics and apparently part of the initial investigation points to the fact that it might have been started that way. there was insulation, there was foam insulation on the ceiling and that might have been a possibility. now the problem is that the place was grossry clouded. authorities say it was built for about 1,000 people and there were more than 2,000 there. when the fire started with dense smoke and flames, people were frantically trying to get out of the place and that's when the problem became worse, miguel. >> rafael. many of the dead found in the bathrooms there. why was that the case? >> it was impossible for

the president can take without having to wait for any congressional action. let's bring in our cnn white house correspondent brianna keilar. she's working the story for us. what are you hearing? >> reporter: wolf, i'm told that there is very much a sense in this meeting between vice president joe biden and advocates of gun control as well as those who have suffered gun violence themselves or lost loved ones to it that there was actually very much a sense that this was an opportunity to do something and they believe they have a bit of, i guess you could say, a mandate to do something because of poll numbers showing the public opinion has shifted in this. the news that the vice president made today was that the white house is looking to go it alone, at least in some ways as it chooses to tackle this problem. go it alone without congress' help and observers of this debate, as you know, have said that this is definitely a possibility but biden today confirmed that it's something the white house is pursing. here's what he said. >> i want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in th
